Each spring, Kirby Medical Center sponsors the Kirby Derby- a 5K walk/run
and 10k run for community members who want to get out and get active.
This past year, we hit a big milestone with 10 years of Kirby Derby! In
honor of the first decade of derbies, race participants received special
medals and shirts.
Kirby Medical Center CEO Steve Tenhouse explains the derby’s humble
origins: “Eleven years ago, when we were coming back on a bus from
a fun run in Chicago, we started talking about bringing race back to Monticello.
Our uneducated guess was maybe we can get 250 people to participate. The
first year, we exceeded that number, and it has grown year after year.”
As in years past, the 10th anniversary Kirby Derby in 2017 was a big success with hundreds of participants,
including many local children who joined in for a special Kids’
Race. Kirby Medical Center also hosted a training program and runner/walker
forum to help runners prepare for the big day.
Many volunteers and sponsors helped make the event possible, and we are
grateful for their continued support. The Kirby Derby gets better every
year, and we look forward to another successful event.
