When the summer months roll around, most families have two things on their mind — having fun and staying safe. Whether you’re preparing for a relaxing day at the pool or something a little more action-packed, safety should always be a priority for you and your little ones.
Keep your family healthy by following the below summer safety checklist!
1. Practice Food Safety
Bacteria can grow quickly in the summer due to warmer temps and humidity. To prevent foodborne illnesses, avoid cross-contamination at all costs and keep an eye on temperatures. If food is perishable, keep in a refrigerator and discard any food that is left unrefrigerated for more than an hour.
2. Wash Your Hands
Regular hand washing before and/or after specific activities is one of the best ways to stop the spread of germs — but sometimes a place to wash your hands isn’t readily available. Pro tip: keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol) with you at all times.
3. Wear the Right Gear
From sunglasses and lightweight clothes to helmets and knee pads, whatever your summer activities are this season be sure to dress accordingly. Protection is critical and can reduce your risk of injury or something more severe.
4. Use Sun Protection.
Your skin needs time for sunscreen to absorb, so remember to apply sunscreen generously at least 15-30 minutes before you head outdoors — even on cloudy days. Select a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 that is water resistant and offers broad-spectrum coverage. Then, be sure to reapply every two hours, or more frequently if sweating or swimming.
5. Visit the Doctor.
Don’t let injuries go untreated! While some injuries can be treated with rest and ice, take note of pain that persists or comes on suddenly. Injuries aside, schedule your child’s back to school check-ups and annual physicals now to ensure a clean bill of health for the remainder of the season!
