With summertime officially in full swing, outdoor activities are on the rise! Whether you’re working in the yard, riding your bike, golfing, or just enjoying the warm weather with family and friends, you can prevent a trip to the doctor’s office this summer with these simple tips:
1.) Garden Smart – Whether you enjoy gardening or do it out of necessity (J), protect your back and knees by using a stool, raised planters, and tools with long handles to minimize compressive and shear forces that may cause injury.
2.) Stretch It - If you’re participating in physical activity, make sure you take time to warm-up properly, take sufficient breaks, and make time to recover.
3.) Wear a helmet – Use your head and protect it! If you are riding a bike, motorcycle, scooter, etc… make sure to wear a properly fitted helmet to protect your melon.
4.) Stay hydrated – Make sure you are drinking water throughout the day as you feel thirsty. With warmer temperatures, your body heats up and sweats (loses) more to stay cool. Stay away from over consumption of caffeinated beverages and cut out sugary drinks as they don’t replace the fluids you lose when sweating. Caffeine (diuretic) can actually make you urinate more!
5.) Wear sunscreen – Wearing sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher can help protect your skin from getting damaged and helps fight against cancer and sunburn. Apply approx. 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapply the same amount approx. every 2 hours.
Summertime is a great time to relax, reset, and enjoy beautiful weather and outdoor activities – don’t let injury get in the way!
