Get to Know: Dan Burkybile – Director of Pharmacy Services
Why Dan chose being a Pharmacist-
"I loved animals and grew up with lots of them – parrots, tons
of dogs, a cat, fish, and more. When I started to job shadow my junior/senior
of high school 2001/2002, every veterinarian told me the market was saturated
and it would be hard to find jobs. Plan B was look into pharmacy and after
job shadowing, it looked easy enough so off I went to pharmacy school."
The best thing about Dan's job-
"Lots of problem solving. Every day is different and you are forced
to learn new things all the time."
What Dan has gained from being a part of our Kirby Family-
"Our mission of wellness has really sparked me. I’ve never done
triathlon’s before. I’ve completed 2 sprint triathlons and
my first 10 K (all hosted by KMC) since joining Kirby the summer of 2018.
Now, I’m attending CrossFit 5 days a week. We are lucky we have
experts here in various specialties. Jordan + crew are great CrossFit
coaches. Andrew Buffenbarger, KMC Chief Compliance Officier, has helped
me find a road bike and got me cycling. Kathleen Quinn, Registered Dietitian,
has coached me in swimming technique with her expertise. Even the therapy
department has nursed me back to activity when I had a pinched nerve in
my back. Our Café is great here too – I eat there every day!"
Life outside of KMC-
"
My wife, Jessica, is nurse but works as the Continuing Education Coordinator
at Carle (main hospital). Three kids – Sophie (8) who loves gymnastics,
Henry (7) who likes hockey and soccer and wants to be the center of attention
all the time (my wife says he takes after me!?), and DJ (3) who loves
Cars (the movie with Lightning McQueen). Our 2 golden retrievers are also
a big part of our family – Rudy (10) and Rose (3). We also just
adopted “Kevin” a cat that showed up at Edith Clayton’s
house. We love the movie Home Alone and this cat didn’t have a home
until Edith found him so Kevin seemed fitting as he was the star of Home
Alone."
Outside of Kirby, Dan coaches the HS soccer team and loves
to compete against the athletes come summertime. He loves a good card or
board game with friends.
The best moment of Dan's career so far-
"2019 – With Tanya Oliger, Bruce Strike, and Mark Fred we licensed
a hospital pharmacy and now a retail pharmacy – Kirby Rx. I was
just named coach of year from the Decatur Herald and News-Gazette."
Dan's workday in a nutshell-
"First thing in the morning, I review patient charts – new patients,
new labs, changes that occurred overnight. This will prepare me to go
on medical rounds to see our inpatients with the nurse and hospitalist.
During and after rounds, I will put in or edit medical orders. Post rounds,
I check medications to make sure they are filled correctly and then consult
with patients as needed. Lately, I’ve also been heading over to
Kirby Rx to help fill in when I can."
Dan is determind, bold, and perceptive. We are so lucky to have him as
a part of our Kirby family!
Dan is most excited about the growth of Kirby Rx in 2020!
