Getting to Know
Kristin Schmidt MS, RDN,LDN, Clinical Dietitian
Q: Why did you choose to work in healthcare?
A: Growing up I loved two things- Animals and Food. My parents didn’t
want me to be a chef so I started out my college career in pre-veterinary
medicine. Growing up in the Chicago suburbs and going to a school where
everyone grew up farming, I knew odds were not in my favor for Vet school.
I took a Animal Nutrition class and then took a Nutrition 101 class and
fell in love immediately. After caregiving for my Grandma with Alzheimer’s,
it was the first time I learned how nutrition could impact chronic diseases
and decided to pursue a career as a dietitian. I am passionate about Alzheimer’s
research and getting involved with the Alzheimer’s Association.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: Well first of all, I get to talk about food all day! I truly enjoy
getting to know my patients and our community and sharing nutrition knowledge
with them to help them manage their conditions or reach their goals.
Q: What have you gained from being a part of our Kirby family?
A: After interning at Kirby in 2020, I knew this was the right place for
me. I look forward to going to work each day to help my patients and coworkers
live a healthier lifestyle and reach their goals. Providing accurate,
credible, evidence-based information to my patients helps give them confidence
as it can be confusing with all the nutrition misinformation out there.
Q: Tell us about your family/life outside of Kirby.
A: I moved to Champaign in 2016 from the Chicago Suburbs and never left.
My fiancé and I adopted an Australian Shepard mix and have two
cats in our new house. We love getting to know everyone in the community
and look forward to warm weather where you can find us traveling to go
hiking and camping, having bonfires and grilling.
Q: What are your hobbies outside of work?
A: Outside of work, I enjoy running, camping and hiking. I’ve enjoyed
running a few half marathons and hope to run a full one someday. Something
about being outside in nature never gets old! When life returns to a new
normal, I hope to attend Chicago sports games.
Q: If you had an extra hour every day, what would you spend it doing?
A: Probably eating tacos and hiking with my dog.
Q: Three words to describe you.
A: Positive, Happy, Caring
Q: What are you excited for in 2021?
A: 2021 is a year of hope for what the future holds. I am most excited
about getting married in September!
Q: What is your life motto?
A: “Just Keep Smiling” . Every day may not be good, but there’s
something good in every day.
