Getting to Know Dr. Amrita Pandit
Q: When did you know you wanted to pursue medicine? How did you decide
on general surgery?
A: I was in seventh grade when I decided to pursue medicine. Once I was
in medical school, I knew surgery was best for me as it invovles a combination
of quick thinking and handson work. Complex surgical techniques are the
most exciting to me. Looking back, it turned out to be a perfect fit.
Q: Where did you attend school and earn your degree?
A: I earned a bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery in India. After
I got married, I moved to the United States and completed my general surgery
residency at the University of Vermont School of Medicine.
Q: What brought you to Kirby Medical Center?
A: After working as a trauma and acute care surgeon for three years at
Carle, I was ready for a new experience which would allow me to provide
continuing care to my patients rather than hadning th em off to the next
surgeon at the end of my shift. The opportunity at Kirby Medical Center
came along at just the right time.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your career?
A: As a surgeon, I have a special privilege and a great responsibility.
The patient places a lot of trust in their surgeon when they go under
the knife, and I respect that. The best part is that many surgeries can
relieve pain and suffering almost immedietely, and I get to make that
happen. I also enjoy seeing patietns before their surgery and getting
to know them.
Q: When you're not in the operating room, where can we find you?
A: You would probably find me playing with my two girls. I also love cooking,
baking, painting, crocheting and knitting.
