4th of July Safety Tips

  1. Sparkler / Firework Safety – Never disassemble or try to make your own fireworks, point fireworks at anyone, attempt to light multiple devices at the same time, and only light fireworks in areas that are dry and fire resistant. Have a portable fire extinguisher or water hose nearby to put out any potential fires that may occur. They say the best fireworks salesman are always missing a few fingers – don’t be that person! “Light up the sky, not the house.”
  2. Use alcohol responsibly – Alcohol and fireworks or swimming can be hazardous and a dangerous combination. If you enjoy a drink, please do so responsibly by having a designated driver and make sure to hydrate with plenty of water throughout the day to combat heat-related illness.
  3. Food - Allowing food to sit in outdoor temperatures can invite food-borne illness. The U.S. FDA suggests never leaving food out for more than one hour when the temperature is above 90 F and not more than two hours at other times. Foods that need to be kept cold should be placed in a cooler with plenty of ice or freezing packs and held at a maximum temperature of 40 F. While mayonnaise and other egg dishes are often associated with food poisoning, any food can potentially become contaminated. Make sure to wash hands frequently to help prevent food contamination during preparation.
  4. Grilling – Along the “food” lines, make sure to check gas grill hoses for cracks, holes, and leaks. Keep children away from grills, and never grill indoors where ventilation could be an issue. Also, make sure to keep open flamed, charcoal grills a safe distance away from trees, branches, or anything else that can catch fire quickly.
  5. Water Activity – If boating, make sure to wear a life jacket, plenty of sunscreen, and don’t drink alcohol while driving the boat. Keep an eye on young children around bodies of water and keep a first aid kit nearby just in case of an emergency.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July holiday!
