With a chance for an unusual setting, Marthaan Riegel shared an i
dea to Auxiliary members to sponsor a Quilt Show fundraiser called "Piece
by Piece." The fundraiser constisted of 100 quilts owned by Auxiliary
members and made by their grandmothers, mothers, and themselves. They
displayed the quilts throughout Leiper’s Furniture store.
Unlike other quilt shows, these quilts were not hung or placed on showing
racks. They covered beds, draped across upholstered chairs, used as table
cloths or decoarting sofas. Each member finding a quilt to show was asked
for a written hisotry to accompany it.
"It's a showing because the group only plas to display the quilts
to highlight their work and craft."
Tickets were sold for $6 to help raise money for Kirby Auxiliary and a
quilt was given away as a door prize at the end of the event.
In 2005, Monticello Main Street presented the Kirby Auxiliary with the
“Unique Event” award for their Piece by Piece Quilt Show!
