More than a bag of fruit……
At Kirby Medical Center, we as a family are truly blessed. There is no
shortage of good food and decadent sweets to share. Our Christmas party
offered such a variety of wonderful treats and loads of gifts. We celebrate
together the good times, and ban together in times of strife and grief
for our own to deliver food, run errands, or fill any needs of our ‘family
member’ in trouble. In fact, all through the year this Spirit of
Giving goes on. From Hospital Week, to fundraisers for others, our Hospital
supports us all through gracious gifts of money, food, and our strongest
feature-man power-the people who give willingly of their time and talents.
Our community loves us as well. One illustration of that love is the bag
of fruit we all received this week. A simple bag of fruit: a couple of
apples, a grapefruit, a pear, and an orange. A few bucks in a bag? Or,
maybe a little bit more?
A lot more! The giving of this fruit to all Kirby employees was originated
by Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Barnes many years ago. This couple, so thankful
for the hospital and its employees, hand delivered fruit to all staff
at Kirby Hospital. Back then (even now with the economy!) fruit was harder
to come by without great expense. Kids used to find an apple and maybe
even an orange in their stockings on Christmas morning. Precious as gold,
these treats were prized, and the giving of fruit had meaning and purpose.
When the Barnes’ first started delivering fruit it was from their
hearts. Sharing what they had the means to give, to the people working
at Kirby, the hospital they loved so well. Eventually the couple passed
away, but their legacy went on. In their will they assigned funds to be
set aside that at Christmas time each year, each employee would continue
to receive fruit.
Eventually the money set aside ran out, but the Hospital Board and Administration
knew that the Spirit of the Gift could never die. Each year the fruit
is purchased for all of us to continue the Spirit of Giving set up so
long ago by Mr. and Mrs. Barnes.
So look in that bag of fruit, take in the aroma of something pure, and
remember-Kirby Medical Center and its employees are cherished, both by
the community and the Leadership that knows the value of people……and
a bag of fruit.
Happy, Health, and Blessed Holidays to you all!
