How to Stay Active During Social Distancing

                April 15, 2020

                Keeping Active at Home

It’s probably safe to say that practicing social distancing hasn’t been easy for many of us, but it’s necessary nonetheless. Now that we are staying home and gyms are closed, staying active, and getting in a workout can be challenging — especially if we have gotten into a sedentary rut. The good news is that exercising at home is easier than you think! Here are some tips to help you stay motivated.

                Get Online!

While you are probably using your computer for surfing the web or working from home, you can also find some motivation to get active by searching for online exercise classes. From yoga to Zumba, you can find a host of free exercise tutorials and classes by simply going to Youtube or Vimeo. Be sure to check your gym or studio’s social media pages for live workouts and updates, too!

                Get Outside!

Getting out for some fresh air is not only good for your mental health, but your physical health, too. If it’s a bright sunny day, you can soak up some vitamin D while walking or jogging in your neighborhood. Just remember the rules of social distancing when you leave the house — and stay at least 6 feet away from others who may be enjoying the outdoors as well.

                Do Some Yardwork!

Did you know that yard work can burn calories and give you a workout? Now that spring is here, and the weather is warming up, here are some great outdoor chores to keep you active and that can also be a way to give you a good cardio and full-body workout:

                • Mow the lawn.
                • Sweep the patio.
                • Rake and bag up any leftover winter leaves.
                • Weed the garden and plant seeds.

At Kirby Medical Center, we’re dedicated to helping our community find ways to achieve better health and wellness. Trying any of the above fitness tips can help you stay both physically and mentally healthy while social distancing.

If you are concerned about the COVID-19 pandemic and the community, you can visit KMC’s Medial Response page for more information.
